Your 3-Day Deschutes River Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Launch & Legend
Meet in the morning, get outfitted, and launch into the Wild & Scenic canyon. Your guides will cover a clear, family-friendly safety talk and get everyone comfortable paddling as a team. Soon the fun begins with classic rapids like Whitehorse; a splashy, confidence-building start that sets the tone for the trip. Between rapids we float past lava rock walls, quiet rifles, and shady banks that invite a first swim. By late afternoon we pull into a sandy beach camp. While guides set up camp, you can explore, skip rocks, cast a line, or just breathe in that high-desert air. Dinner is the first of many gourmet meals, followed by campfire stories. The kind that turns a river into a legend for your kids.
Day 2: Deep Canyon Discovery
Wake up to hot coffee and a peaceful canyon morning. After a hearty breakfast, we float deeper into the Deschutes corridor where the scenery grows bigger and the wildlife gets bolder. Keep your eyes open for bighorn sheep on the cliffs and raptors riding the thermals overhead. The day mixes playful Class II-III rapids with long, scenic drifts that are perfect for conversation, photos, and learning the natural history of the canyon. Your guides are storytellers of the river – sharing what they know about geology, wildlife, and the rhythms of life in the Wild & Scenic. In the afternoon we land at another prime beach camp with time to swim, hike, and unwind. Fresh appetizers roll into a satisfying dinner and dessert that feels downright luxurious out here.
Day 3: The Big Rapids
After breakfast and a smooth camp pack, the river brings a final run of iconic whitewater. Rapid-filled, splashy sequences like Boxcar deliver the perfect finale – exciting, not overwhelming, and a total crowd-pleaser for families. We cap the trip with one more scenic stretch, a relaxed lunch, and a last chance to soak up the canyon before take-out near Maupin. You’ll head home with sandy feet, tired smiles, and that rare feeling of truly reconnecting.

What Guest Are Saying
“Our family of five, along with close friends and their two daughters, joined High Country Expeditions for the 3 Day Deschutes River trip, and it was one of the highlights of our summer. The canyon scenery was incredible, the river was fun and exciting, and our kids, ages 7, 10, 11, 12, and 14, had an absolute blast swimming, exploring camp, and making memories together. It was a wonderful way for both our families to unplug and spend quality time outdoors.
The High Country crew was professional, courteous, knowledgeable, and genuinely fun to be around. They made everyone feel comfortable from the start and took great care of our group throughout the trip. We especially appreciated how accommodating they were with our kids dietary needs. The food was outstanding and far exceeded our expectations for a river trip.
We highly recommend High Country Expeditions for a family adventure that combines beautiful scenery, great food, fun whitewater, and an experienced guide team.” – Kate P.
