Understanding Whitewater Rapid Classes

Whitewater rivers are rated using an international classification system that helps guests understand difficulty levels and expected conditions.

  • Class I: Moving water with small waves. Minimal risk.
  • Class II: Easy rapids with wide channels and gentle maneuvering.
  • Class III: Moderate rapids with splashy waves and exciting features.
  • Class IV: Powerful, technical rapids requiring active paddling and guide direction.
  • Class V: Expert-level whitewater with large waves and complex routes.

Our guides provide thorough safety briefings and paddling instruction so guests understand what to expect before launching.

Find a description of how we rate our rivers and rapids, from class 1 through 5, on our rapid classification page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Many of our trips are specifically designed for first-time rafters and families. Professional guides provide safety instruction, equipment, and support throughout the trip.

No prior experience is required for most trips. Guides teach paddling techniques and safety procedures before launching.

Our trips run rain or shine. In the Pacific Northwest, a little weather is part of the experience, and with the right gear, it can be part of the fun. Around here, we believe there’s rarely a bad day on the river when you’re dressed for it.

That said, safety always comes first. Our guides keep a close eye on river and weather conditions and will make thoughtful decisions if changing conditions create unnecessary risk. If adjustments need to be made, they are always made with guest safety as the top priority.

For early season trips or days with variable weather, we recommend bringing extra warm layers and appropriate gear for the forecast. Dry bags are always provided so you can bring along extra clothing, warming layers, or other personal items and keep them dry on the trip.

Please feel free to contact us anytime with clothing or gear questions. We are always happy to share our knowledge and help you feel prepared for a great day on the river.

Our team can help you choose the best trip for your group’s age, experience, and adventure goals. McKenzie is great for families, Deschutes offers classic Central Oregon rafting for all ages, Lower Klamath is fun and splashy for families and first-timers, California Salmon delivers a remote Wild & Scenic adventure, Owyhee offers a premier multi-day canyon trip, and the Upper Klamath brings bigger whitewater.

Guides & Gratuities

Our guides are at the heart of every High Country Expeditions trip. Highly trained, experienced, and deeply passionate about the river, they are committed to creating a safe, fun, and memorable experience from the moment you arrive to the final shuttle ride back.

For our team, guiding is far more than simply rowing a boat. It is a craft built on river knowledge, judgment, hospitality, and a genuine love for sharing wild places with others. Long before guests arrive, our guides are preparing equipment, organizing logistics, and thinking through the small details that help each trip feel smooth, thoughtful, and well cared for.

High Country Expeditions guides are often paid a set trip rate based on the type of outing they lead. If your guide helps make your day especially meaningful or memorable, gratuities are always appreciated, though never required. Many guests choose to tip as a way of recognizing exceptional care, effort, and service.
